After your water softener or water filtration system is installed, you probably don't spend too much time looking at it. Which is fine because when everything is working properly, it will treat your water day after day without needing your attention.
But if you've ever walked by and noticed the display screen has changed colors, you may have wondered:
"Is that normal?"
The good news is that your Varsity Water system is designed to communicate with you using simple colors. Here's a quick run down on what each color means.
🟦 Blue: Smooth Cruising
The color of light you'll see most often is blue. This is the indicator that your system is doing it's job and actively treating your water.
Whether it's softening hard water or filtering unwanted contaminants, the system is driving the treated water through your home or business.
You can rotate through different information on this screen using the arrow buttons, such as the current time and the gallons remaining the system can treat before regeneration.
It's possible your system is in energy saving mode, and there is no blue light while your system is operating. That doesn't mean anything is wrong. As soon as you push a button, the light will turn on to help you see the info.
🟩 Green: Means Go!
Occasionally to refresh the media inside your system, the water softener or filter goes through a series of cleaning and rinse cycles called "regeneration."
When these cycles start, your system will let you know by turning on a green light and displaying a count down for the current cycle it is in.
Regeneration is usually scheduled to happen in the middle of the night when water is not being used. So you might not ever see this green light, but just know it's on-the-go taking care of itself!
🟨 Yellow: Slow Down
If you happen to walk past your water softener and see a yellow light, slow down and pay attention.
The display turns yellow when it wants to let you know that the salt in your brine tank might be running low.
Your softener will still operate while this screen is on, but it's a good time to:
- Check the brine tank
- Add salt if needed
- Make sure the salt isn't bridging or clumping
The yellow light isn't an emergency, but it's something you'll not want to ignore for too long. A little attention now helps keep your softener running at it's best long term.

🟥 Red: Stop!
If your water treatment system is seeing red, be sure to take a minute and check it out.
This means that it has detected an error that should be addressed.
In most cases, the issue may be something simple. Other times, you may need your local water professionals to come take a look at it.
The important thing is to not panic.
If you see a red display, make a note of the three digit error code number and any explanation that might be on the screen. You can refer to your owner's manual to find more details about the issue as well.
Contact your local water treatment pro if the issues can't be resolved. Your system is deigned to signal you when something needs attention, helping prevent small issues from becoming larger ones.
